THE OTHER ART FAIR :: DALLAS 2021
I am honored to be showing at The Other Art Fair Dallas in May 2021. As always, I am inspired by the amazing work of fellow artists and love the concept of the show. I created a custom body of work for the show and enjoyed the hell out of the experience.
My focus for the exhibition was attempting to communicate a sense of the sublime through the juxtaposition of the ethereal and the concrete. I feel that the true mark of our universe can be seen in those spaces in between the hard and soft, the linear and the mystic, the human and the other.
For my musical mindset for the series, give a listen to the amazing Yussef Dayes, Alfa Mist, and Mansur Brown on “Love Is The Message.“

OTHER WORK
SERIES: THE 5 ELEMENTS
Continuing to delve into ancient belief structures, I am exploring the Chinese 5 Element Theory in these 5 canvases. Each element traditionally carries a color association, an animal representative, a series of qualities, and interrelated relationships between them. METAL is white and is fostered by EARTH and overcomes WOOD. FIRE is red and is fostered by WOOD and overcomes METAL. WOOD is green and is fostered by WATER and overcomes EARTH. WATER is black and is fostered by METAL and overcomes FIRE. EARTH is yellow and is fostered by FIRE and overcomes WATER. I am fascinated by both the intricacies of these ancient belief structures and their ultimate impermanence. Check out my musical mindset for these paintings… Turn up the soul-stirring beauty and balance of Tan Dun, Yo-Yo Ma, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra performing “Song of Peace.”

THE OLMEC SUPERNATURALS
The Olmecs were the earliest known major Mesoamerican civilization. Known through artifacts for their rich visual tradition, the culture was textured and sophisticated. Yet, we are only guessing at many aspects of their existence. I am exploring their main deities through a series of six canvases. The Olmec religion captures the essence of the ephemeral nature of belief. I am fascinated by the intricacies of these ancient belief structures and their ultimate impermanence. I feel we can learn so much about our current era through the relative irrelevance of what came before. Formerly sacred, defining beliefs are not even known in the face of seismic societal and cultural changes. We are experiencing those seismic shifts in our own time and are dealing with change in our own time, causing our society to question what we held sacred before. For a glimpse of my musical mindset for this series, turn up Mexican composer Carlos Chavez’s orchestration of the Dietrich Buxtehude piece “Chacona.”

THE OSIRIS CYCLE
The Osiris mythos were a defining set of stories for ancient Egyptian belief. Shot through with themes of jealousy, murder, resurrection and birth, they encompass so much of the human experience but set it in the divine. I wanted to capture this story through a series of abstract canvases to explore that connection between human and divine qualities and experience and the strength of belief and its ephemeral nature. For my musical mindset… Turn up the stunning young Egyptian phenom, Tamino and his haunting “Habibi.”

SERIES: LUST FOR LIFE
I’m attempting to express the energy of creation itself with these canvases. In an era of pandemic and crisis, the urge to creativity is a sustaining force, bringing color and life where there is none. Bold, striking shapes knife through color fields, expressing that bright impetus with a strong sense of verve, movement, and tension. Check out my musical mindset for these paintings… Turn up the amazing tension and release of Talk Talk’s inimitable “Desire.”

SERIES: RE-ENTRY
For this series, I was all about exuberant play. Working with some of the visual themes explored in the Timbre series, I sought to embody an even greater sense of freedom and action here. That playful energy comes through in these shimmering, expressive canvases. SERIES: BONDS
For this ongoing series, I am exploring human connection through figure / ground relationships. A swirling, varied background field of color is punctuated by raw graphite lines. Atop those elements, shapes dance in an interplay of color and position. The positive / negative relationships between those shapes and their interaction with the painting’s background are an exploration of the shifting, often impermanent nature of human bonds. For a listen to my musical mindset for this work, give a listen to Jambinai’s stunning composition, “Time of Extinction.”

SERIES: ALPHANUMERIC: SEMIOSIS
For this series, I further explored the themes touched upon in the “Alphanumeric” canvases. Themes of bringing together the designer and the artist in me… The dichotomy of my two creative sides, in unity and the third layer of meaning and energy that unity brings. It’s an embodiment of the idea of “SEMIOSIS,” the process of imbuing language with meaning. The interplay of the letterforms with the deep space of color, movement and shape drives this concept home. For a listen to my musical mindset for this work, turn up the sounds of the great Thomas Fonnesbaek and Justin Kauflin colab on the very apropos “Semiosis.”

SERIES: ALPHANUMERIC
This series unites the two sides of my artistic heart — the fine artist and the designer. A grid of color and line define the compositions, suggesting landscapes or architectural shapes. That grid is both broken and underscored by gestural flourish, building texture and emotion. Hand-painted characters suggest additional meaning. For a peek at my musical mindset for this work, turn up the legendary Redman, Mehldau, McBride and Blade colab on “Right Back Round Again.”
